Do You Remember Where You Were?
The day looked much different than today. The innocence of a nation was still intact. The skies were a beautiful blue accompanied by rays of sunshine that could light the darkest cave. The weekday hustle and bustle of New York City was in full swing on that Tuesday morning. Commuters were wrapped in the warmth of the sun while on their way to their destination. I was on my way to the office that morning. I witnessed the events that unfolded. It’s a series of images that cannot be erased from my memory. Do you recall where you were?
8:46 am: A plane is reported to have hit World Trade Center
9:03 am: United Airlines flight 175 strikes the 75-85th floors of the South Tower, World Trade Center
9:37 am: In Washington DC, a plane crashes into the Pentagon
9:59 am South Tower, World Trade Center collapses
10:07 am: In Somerset County, Pennsylvania Flight 93 is crashed into a field
10:28 am: The second tower, the World Trade Center buckles
It was a day we’ll never forget. A moment in our country that we all stood together.
8:30 pm: Silence, shock, despair. The aftershock of the event is felt all over the world. President George Bush speaks to a nation in mourning.
A total of 2,996 people died – 2,977 of them were innocent victims. It’s reported that since the 9/11 tragedy couple of thousand rescue workers have been diagnosed with or passed from cancer-related illnesses due to exposure to toxins at Ground Zero.
Today marks another anniversary of the day our country came under attack. The Freedom Tower stands in the place of the old towers. Our values, our way of life, and our freedom continue to be threatened but somehow we find ways to stand strong.
Take a moment of silence for those no longer with us and be thankful for the lives we get to wake up to, today.
We will never forget.
