Empowerment Series: Sam Morelos on Colleen Hoover’s Regretting You: Finding Light in the Wreckage

Now that Regretting You has officially hit theatres, audiences everywhere are feeling the emotional aftershock of Colleen Hoover’s powerful story, and one of the film’s brightest sparks is Sam Morelos, whose portrayal of Lexi reminds us that laughter can be a lifeline through pain.

Los Angeles native and actress-director, Sam Morelos, known for That ’90s Show, Descendants: The Rise of Red, and Summer of ’69, brings her signature warmth and wit to the screen once again. In Regretting You—the film adaptation of Hoover’s bestselling novel starring Allison Williams, Mckenna Grace, Dave Franco, Mason Thames, Scott Eastwood, and Willa Fitzgerald. Morelos delivers a performance that’s equal parts heart, humor, and healing.

When she joined me on AW Confidential, Sam was every bit as genuine as the character she plays. “When I was on set, I thought I was in a comedy,” she said with a laugh. “I wasn’t around for the heavy emotional scenes, so when I watched the movie back, I was like, oh yeah… this is a really sad movie!

Her lighthearted approach wasn’t about avoiding the heaviness, but honoring it in her own way. “The funny doesn’t come from trying to make people laugh,” she explained. “It comes from wanting to support someone through something difficult. Sometimes, all you can do is laugh to get through it.”

That philosophy hit home. I shared that I lost my mother two years ago, and that the film’s exploration of grief felt personal. Sam nodded, her empathy genuine. “Even in my own life, when I’m going through something tough, humor helps me move forward,” she said softly. “It’s how I find light in the darkness.”

Regretting You captures the messiness of love, family, and forgiveness, and Sam’s portrayal of Lexi gives the story its much-needed warmth. Through her humor and heart, she reminds us that even when life unravels, connection and laughter can hold us together.

As our conversation ended, one truth stood out: Sam Morelos doesn’t just act the part of the friend who brings levity; she lives it. In a film filled with pain and revelation, she becomes the reminder that sometimes, the bravest thing we can do is laugh through the wreckage and keep moving toward the light.
