Rebecca and Becky G: The Freedom to Be All of Who You Are

Project Healthy Minds' Fifth Annual World Mental Health Day Festival

In 2025, I covered REBBECA at its world premiere during the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City. With Project Healthy Minds serving as an impact partner, the documentary explored the story of a Mexican American woman balancing her dreams, cultural roots, and family legacy while confronting personal struggles beyond the spotlight.

On October 10, 2026, Becky G sat down with NBC News correspondent Morgan Radford on the main stage at Spring Studios in New York City as part of the Project Healthy Minds World Mental Health Day Festival for a candid and heartfelt conversation about personal growth, family, and the ongoing journey of healing.

Watching Becky G on stage for a second time offered me a glimpse into the evolution of a woman continuing to embrace every part of herself. She spoke with vulnerability and authenticity about learning to let go of what she cannot control and finding peace in accepting that healing is an ongoing journey. Through years of therapy, she has come to understand that parts of ourselves develop out of survival. Rather than feeling ashamed of those parts, she has learned to embrace them. The younger version of herself will always be part of who she is, and she is learning to give those parts of herself the space and acceptance they deserve.

Her reflections on family revealed another layer of that journey. As a proud Chicana and eldest daughter, Becky spoke about the expectations and responsibilities that can come with being the person others depend on. She acknowledged that she didn’t enter therapy with the intention of fixing her family, but the work helped her recognize that she didn’t have to fix everything or everyone. Regardless of her accomplishments or how much she does for others, some things will always remain beyond her control. Therapy has helped her approach her relationships with greater understanding while learning to be more present for herself and the people she cares about.

Her cultural pride was equally evident. Describing herself as a “200% percenter,” Becky celebrated being 100% proud of her Mexican heritage and 100% proud to be American. She also spoke about continuing to learn Spanish and finding joy in using the language. For many of us in the Latino community, the familiar expression, ni de aquí, ni de allá, neither from here nor there, captures the complexities of navigating two cultures. Becky’s message offered another perspective: We don’t have to choose between the different parts of who we are to belong. Embracing our cultural roots and the experiences that shape us can be a source of strength rather than division.

One of the most powerful moments came when Becky offered a gentle trigger warning before addressing a difficult reality of mental health: the moments when someone begins to believe the world would be better without them. As she looked around the room, her message was clear: No one should have to carry that pain alone. She encouraged those struggling to seek support, reminding them that help may not always come from the people they expect. What matters is finding the courage to be honest about what they’re experiencing and allowing others the opportunity to meet them where they are.

For me, that moment captured the importance of conversations like these. Beyond the music, the achievements, and the public persona, there is a shared human experience that connects us. Truth is at the heart of that connection. It’s the reason I do what I do. I believe that embracing our truth can help us heal and release some of the pain we carry as we navigate life.

Healing isn’t about becoming someone else. Sometimes it’s about learning to embrace every part of who you’ve always been.
