Sex and the City Turns 20

The anniversary of SATC this week overwhelmed me with nostalgia. Turn back the pages of the calendar when we were preoccupied with scheduling Girls Night at the newest hot spot in Manhattan. Cosmos were the cocktail in style while sharing our stories of bad dates, horrible bosses and the next sample sale. Love was as much a goal as finding my own personal Mr. Big. When the phenomenon started, I was looking for the same love as Carrie Bradshaw.

My girlfriends and I took turns figuring out what character we most resembled. A few of us identified with a combination of the women on the show while the rest seemed to link  with one. These were some of the best years of metropolitan single life but it wasn’t exclusively related to the shopping, dining or dating.

The most enjoyable part of this era was the time spent bonding on the regular with a special group of women. We related to each other, connected and truly support one another no matter what was happening in our lives at any given time. We were open and honest having no shame when sharing our mistakes, concerns or most embarrassing moments. The after-work happy hour or Sunday brunch conversations consisted of details about the latest fool that never called back after a first date. Other times we  strategized about how to handle the breakup conversation we dreaded having with the guy we weren’t into for whatever reason. Sometimes, girl chat brought us together to discuss those topics we couldn’t talk about with anyone else like infidelity, paps, fear of commitment, loneliness or the jerk at work who could not take no for an answer. The time was ours before marriage, babies and smartphones!

Fast forward 20 years everything has changed. I had to grow up and take on real life roles with a job and family. It was a fun and exciting ride on the ferris wheel. While I reminisce about the sexy time in the city which I still live in – NYC, I also recognize it was a chapter of my book. One section that I can refer back to in my mind to make me smile. My 20’s and 30’s were to love everyone else but my 40’s are the years to acknowledge the importance of self-love. I can’t say it any better than Samantha’s character.

This weekend let’s indulge in a binge-a-thon of Sex and the City marathon to take a break from the world of digital overload that takes us away from true connection. Enjoy getting Carried-Away, again.
