They Are Not Just Words
I arrived work early this morning. The time forced me to bump into more people than usual. On my way off the elevator, I noticed a presence behind me of someone that I had seen in passing but didn’t know, personally. I swiped my identification to get on the floor and held the door for the young lady behind me. Her silence was not only annoying but rude. It completely left me in an irritated state hard to shake off this morning. However, the show must go on.
My mother was always a stickler for etiquette. She showed us that “please” and “thank you” are some of the simplest words in the dictionary. However, they go a long way in society. I don’t feel the gender makes a difference. Men and women are equally capable of being impolite. It is unfortunate that there are individuals with such little appreciation for manners.
It is more likely for me to want to help someone who says please as opposed to another that barely looks in my direction when stating a request. The words ” thank you” can be insignificant to some. While for others it can make their day brighter, a little sign of gratefulness. I taught my daughter how to use both words at an early age. It is not only about teaching courtesy. It encourages gratitude for the smaller things.
Let’s challenge ourselves to use the magic words “Please” and “Thank You” more frequently. Hopefully, it will entice other people to pay it forward.
