Redefining Success: Why Titles Don’t Define You, Truth Does
I spent years working in corporate America, a space where titles are often assumed to tell your story and define who you are. But titles are, at their core, labels and our attachment to labels extends far beyond the workplace. We use them to signal achievement, status, belonging and, sometimes, our perceived worth. You only have to look at our relationship with luxury to see how powerful a label can become.
In 2025, the luxury retail industry experienced a slowdown. Yet despite that momentary shift, the industry continues to generate hundreds of billions of dollars globally. Over the past five years, profits in the luxury space have nearly tripled.
So, the question is not whether labels work; they clearly do. The real question is why we are so attached to them. Is it the belief that labels represent higher quality? The desire to keep up with perceived expectations? A visible symbol of status? Or perhaps the assumption that being seen with the right label earns us more respect?
Titles in the workplace can offer similar validation. Many people invest years of study, spend thousands on education, and devote countless hours to proving their worth. For some, having a title on the door, on the desk, or in an email signature feels like confirmation that the journey mattered. These things can become signals of our worth. Add a paycheck with a lot of zeros, and it is easy to understand why titles hold so much weight, but this definition of success is not universal.
There is another side of success we don’t talk about enough: what it can cost us. The pursuit of the title, the salary, the recognition, or the next level can require sacrifice. Sometimes that sacrifice is time. Sometimes it is our health, relationships, peace of mind, or the parts of ourselves we put aside because we are too busy proving we belong. Ambition is not the problem. But at some point, we have to ask whether the version of success we’re chasing is worth what we are giving up, to achieve it.
Everyone has their own definition of success, and no one definition is more valid than another, they are simply different. Success is deeply personal and directly connected to what matters most to you, a title does not capture that.
At its core, a title is a label, a category created to reflect responsibility, education, experience, or scope. Organizations need structure and qualified people in clearly defined roles to operate effectively, but behind every title is a human being.
A title, whether on a door or a business card, cannot tell the whole story of who you are. It doesn’t capture your character, your resilience, or the truth you carry.
Truth Bomb:
Titles can be useful. They can open doors and create structure, but they were never meant to define your worth. Your truth does.
So, I will leave you with this.
If your title were removed tomorrow, what would still make your journey feel meaningful and what did it cost you to get there?
That answer tells you everything.
