Empowerment Series: Netflix Series “Fake Profile,” “Who Killed Sara” and Telemundo’s “Malverde: El Santo Patron”, Mexican Actress, Carolina Miranda Shares a Gift with AW
In 2018, Carolina Miranda won Best Actress at Los México Awards. It was a sign that she was on her way to a bright future. The talented actress is no stranger to the small screen with hits like Senora Acero and Los Rey. In the Spring of 2021, the stunning beauty became a household name thanks to 55M subscribers. Netflix’s biggest non-English hit, Who Killed Sara, placed Carolina in front of millions of new faces. We are obsessed with the crime thriller and excited to see how it unfolds.
Her newest role as Isabel Aguilar in Malverde: El Santo Patron, Telemundo’s first-period piece is sure to generate even more excitement among her fans. The action-packed telenovela takes place during the early 1900s and is inspired by real-life legend, Jesus Juárez Mazo nicknamed “Malverde.” The people of the Mexican State of Sinaloa perceived him as a protector of the innocent. The figure, eventually, became a religious idol. He is referred to as “Angel of the Poor,” allegedly, stealing from the rich to give to the needy. The mega-production recreated a time period, bringing life to this legendary character. This series is an elevated form of storytelling with out-of-the-box creative directing that includes solid acting and a touch of history. The series has all the makings of a crowd-pleaser and will appeal to a broad audience.
Recently, I had an opportunity to sit for an interview with Carolina and ask her about Who Killed Sara, as well as, the newest series. We also discussed the significance of the new production. She was charismatic and authentic when delivering responses, making it a delightful conversation! It was an honor and pleasure to speak with the Mexican native during Hispanic Heritage Month. Hopefully, you will watch the full interview with a bonus trailer on the AW Confidential YouTube channel to capture the true essence of this engaging conversation.
Congratulations on all your success this year with Who Killed Sara the Mexican whodunnit that became the most popular non-English series on Netflix! In Who Killed Sara you play Elisa Lazcano, a brave, determined woman who sticks to her convictions, no matter the consequences. In your new role, as Isabel Aguilar in Malverde: Santo Patron, you are a good-hearted, smart woman, who is also stubborn. Would you say these characters have similar traits, if so, how? How are they completely different? The characters are different, Elisa Lazcano of “Who Killed Sara” is kind of crazy, not so normal! Malverde’s, Isabel is a very strong and powerful woman. She’s also looking for justice but this is a period piece that is being interpreted. Isabel is always in her home. She loves her son, husband, and father. She is another kind of woman but very powerful, too. I know the audience will see it.
Malverde: El Santo Patron is a period piece, very different from your Netflix series. This story is based on true events surrounding Jesus Malverde, a hugely controversial bandit from the 1900s who was also a “Man of the people” and protected the innocent. From the costume design to a spectacular 215,000 sq. ft. backlot built in one of Mexico’s national parks. Efforts of the production team were meant to take you back in time. Amazing! It is a very big production of Telemundo, an honor to be part of a period piece. The sets were amazing! It was like being back in history -felt like a movie. I loved the costumes and sets that made you feel you were in another life. We were disconnected with no cell signals to talk to friends or family. You are really disconnected from your world, walking into a piece of history but enjoying it, as much as you can. We had so much fun while there, disconnected from reality.
Hispanic Heritage Month began on September 15. You have worked on some wonderful Mexican productions with great Latino talent. What does it mean for you to represent your culture and be part of a series that tells the story of a Mexican character? It is very important to me, Malverde is a legend in Mexico. To be the love of Malverde was a high responsibility for me but I enjoyed it. I learned a lot about my own history and Malverde, too. I am Mexican and need to know about my own history. I’m honored to play this character in the production, interpreting the role of Isabel.
Can you share why you think we should watch Malverde: San Patron? Malverde is a little piece of Mexico on your tv. It is important history about Mexico and this Saint. You will enjoy the action, drama, romance, Malverde, and my character, Isabel Aguilar.
I read that you had to practice your poker face to ensure not to give away the secret of “Who Killed Sara?” Can you share any top-secret plans for a third season? No, I can’t! I have a great poker face but my production team would kill me if I say something bad!! (ha-ha). I am very proud of this project Who Killed Sara, it’s amazing. It’s going to be our third season, we’ll have many surprises for you and the audience. Thank you very much for all the love you give to my character, it’s amazing for me and an honor to play Eliza.
I was unable to get any secrets from the actress regarding the upcoming season of Who Killed Sara but she did leave a gift. Carolina’s pride in representing and learning about her history inspired me to look deeper into my own. In order to preserve our heritage, it’s important to share the stories with generations to come. Our interview was a reminder; the journey to figuring out who we are starts with understanding the struggles, achievements, and experiences of those that came before us.
The series is an opportunity to be part of something bigger, a chance for audiences everywhere to see a piece of Mexico’s story. You can also see Carolina starring in the hit series, Fake Profile, now playing on Netflix.
AW is incredibly grateful to Carolina for lending her time for this interview. We look forward to seeing more of her, very soon!
