Summer State of Mind. Check out 3 of My Favorite Books – Bottle of Wine in Hand!
1. You Are a Badass, Jen Sincero: If you’re feeling like you need a good kick in the ass. Be prepared to restart that engine. This author won’t let you feel sorry for yourself! No nonsense and truly genuine when she talks about learning to love yourself . Self-love is king, relentless in the journey to the holy grail of happiness. My teenage daughter purchased the book for me thinking it’s what I needed at the time. The book had an impact as it pushed me to think of ways to strengthen my inner courage. Helping me carve my road to personal success.
2. A Year of Yes, Shonda Rhimes: Women know and love her creations. She is the creator of Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, Private Practice and How To Get Away with Murder. She has figured out how to entangle our hearts and souls in the characters and stories of these powerful television dramas for years. In a year of Yes, she shows us that she is just as vulnerable and insecure as any one of us. A single mother of three children with a demanding career. We learn that things aren’t always what they seem and different things work for different people. Ms. Rhimes takes us on her journey showing us that accepting the challenges not only promotes growth. It teaches us the lessons about ourselves that must be learned to rise to the next level.
3. We’re Going to Need More Wine, Gabrielle Union: She is a wife, career actress, business professional and the wife of NBA Basketball All-Star Dwyane Wade. Her book is raw and probably one of the most real accounts of a powerful, yet vulnerable woman, The account of events in her life as told in her words is relatable. There were plenty of moments in her memoir when I felt like this could be me. The trajectory of what happened felt honest and down to earth. I enjoyed the turn of each page appreciating the revelation of a life. It helped me to know there are others that experienced similar heartbreak, disappointment and confusion in their lives. The best part was knowing they were able to come out on the other side.
Summer allows some downtime in between picnics and vacations. Let’s try to immerse ourselves in a good read over the season. It might help us connect with ourselves. Even better, it can open our eyes to similar experiences other women are going through outside. Hopefully, one of these books will spark your summer too!
